There is NO General Sales Tax in Montana! It’s hard for visitors to get used to but when you purchase something for $2.99 in Montana – you only pay $2.99 at the register, not $3.10 or $3.21.
Montana does not charge tax on business purchases and there is no state or local excise tax on long distance telephone costs. Montana primarily uses property & income taxes to support public services.
The lack of sales tax means that many people come to Montana to make large purchases – on cars, motorhomes, and even appliances & home electronics. One Montana retailer does a huge amount of business selling appliances & home electronics online because there is no sales tax, even when they ship to out-of-state customers.
Montana does have an accomodations or “bed tax” of 7% however. This applies to all stays under 30 days in a hotel, vacation rental, or cabin.
Individual State Taxes And, out of the 50 states, Montana ranks NUMBER SEVEN in income remaining after state and local taxes. Montanans have approx. 90.4% of their income left after paying state and local taxes – which is 8.5% more than the national average!
Personal income tax in Montana is assessed at a rate of 2-8% of taxable income.
General Business Taxes Montana levies a flat corporate tax of 6.75% of net income or $50 – whichever is greater. This compares with corporate tax rates of 9.3% IN California and 8% in Idaho.
